The WTO is of great importance because it is the only international organization where global trade rules are set and disputes are resolved. As of April 2023, the WTO has 164 members, accounting for 98% of global trade. In addition, WTO agreements are known to consist of legal texts on agriculture, telecommunications, government procurement, textiles and clothing, intellectual property rights, industrial standards and product safety, banking, and food sanitation regulations, and more.
There are three main reasons for choosing the topic of 'WTO Reformation and Turkey'. First, although the problems in the WTO system have a historical background, the WTO reform debate is a new and timely topic. Second, existing literature reveals that the topic of 'WTO Reformation and Turkey' has not been studied before. Third, it becomes apparent that the WTO reform has not been extensively explored within the context of international relations theories. Based on this information, the topic of 'WTO Reformation and Turkey' is a subject worth exploring.
Theories in international relations typically address international organizations in two ways: The first concerns the theoretical explanation for the establishment of these organizations, and the second deals with the theoretical explanation of their behavior. This book follows the latter route and attempts to theoretically explain the behavior of the WTO. Two of the main theories of international relations, realism and liberalism are used as basic theoretical approaches.
In this book, it is posed three primary research questions: I) Does the WTO system need reform? II) Why does the WTO system need reform? III) What will be the expected impacts of the WTO reform positions on Turkey? To answer these key questions, the study employed both quantitative and qualitative research methods. It is obtained various data from the UNCTAD, World Economic Outlook, IMF, and WTO databases, some of which are presented in tables in the book.
